Recap from the 2014 USA Science and Engineering Festival

The Department of Defense (DOD) presented the Sneak Peek Friday event at the 2014 USA Science and Engineering Festival (USASEF), April 25 -27, 2014, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.  The DOD‘s unified Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) mission ensures the department has enduring access to a highly competent workforce essential to delivering innovative solutions for the nation's current and future defense challenges.

This year’s USASEF was the largest celebration of its kind with more than 325,000 attendees, 750 exhibits, and 3,000 hands-on activities.  The theme focused on diversity in STEM to promote the variety of careers, and student and teacher makeup in STEM education.

The Assistant Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering’s STEM Development Office  hosted a joint DOD STEM information booth.  The booth showcased DOD’s coordinated STEM strategy through the theme: creating emerging technology through an innovative workforce. Visitors to the booth could also view a STEM compilation video featuring activities from across the military services, and take a DOD STEM strategy brochure.

An array of 24 hands-on interactive DOD exhibits featured technology from across the department including:

  • Army: U.S. Army Medical Command, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command, U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command, U.S. Military Academy;
  • Navy: Naval Research Lab, U.S. Naval Academy, Office of Naval Research, U.S. Marine Corps, Naval Sea Systems Command, Naval Air Systems Command;
  • Air Force: Air Force Research Laboratory, U.S. Air Force Academy, Recruiting;
  • National Security Agency; and the
  • Defense Threat Reduction Agency. 

In addition to the booth exhibits, DOD showcased the STEM Diversity Campaign’s Viva Technology initiative.
