Value Engineering Achievement Award Winners Announced

Last month the Department of Defense announced the winners of the fiscal year 2012 Department of Defense Value Engineering Achievement Awards.  The Value Engineering Awards Program is an acknowledgment of exemplary achievements and encourages additional projects to improve in-house and contractor productivity.

In fiscal year 2012, DoD executed in-house Value Engineering Proposals and accepted contractor-initiated Value Engineering Change Proposals that produced a combined actual savings and cost avoidance of $5.5 billion. Award winners from each DoD component were selected from one of the following five categories: program/project, individual, team, organization, and contractor.  Additionally “Joint Service and special” awards were given to recognize innovative applications or approaches that expand the traditional scope of value engineering use.

Value Engineering is defined as a systematic process of reviewing and analyzing the requirements, functions and elements of systems, project, equipment, facilities, services, and supplies for the purpose of achieving the essential functions at the lowest life-cycle cost consistent with required levels of performance, reliability, quality, or safety.  The Department of Defense Value Engineering Program continues to provide leadership and guidance for government and our industry partners to improve the value of Defense weapons systems and programs by promoting innovation and creativity.   Value Engineering contributes to the overall management objectives of “Better Buying Power” by streamlining operations, improving quality, and reducing or avoiding costs.
