HBCU/MI

Background

The Department of Defense, through the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (ASD(R&E)), provides grant funding for a research and education program targeted to Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority-Serving Institutions (HBCU/MI). The program is designed to improve the capabilities of HBCU/MI to conduct research and educate scientists and engineers in areas important to national defense.

The Army Research Office (ARO), which also acts as ASD(R&E)’s agent, the Office of Naval Research (ONR), and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) carry out this program. The annual funding opportunity announcement (Broad Agency Announcement) is posted on Grants.gov by ARO on behalf of ONR and AFOSR. The opportunity is posted under Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance number 12.630, Basic, Applied, and Advanced Research in Science and Engineering. ARO also makes the grant awards under this program.

HBCU/MI interested in submitting applications under this program should monitor Grants.gov for the funding opportunity announcement issued by ARO, typically in the May timeframe, and review the specific eligibility requirements and application procedures contained therein.
