What is Business Process Reengineering?

Business Process Reengineering (BPR) is the practice of rethinking and redesigning the way work is done to achieve improvements in critical measures of performance – such as cost, quality and service – to better support an organization's mission. BPR enables EI&E to help shape a leaner, more integrated and simplified business environment that rapidly innovate and adapt to seamlessly address the needs of the Department.

Successful implementation of a BPR effort depends on three pillars:
  1. Deep understanding and familiarity with an organization’s mission, requirements, and dynamics;
  2. Clear capability vision, involvement, and support from senior leadership, sustained by a “capacity for action”;
  3. Intelligent leveraging of information technology as a dynamic and scalable tool.
A BPR effort begins with understanding what is necessary to achieve a required functional capability.  To achieve this understanding, BEI performs in-depth analysis of a functional business area’s inputs, outputs, processes, and requirements then works to leverage existing resources and processes, and if necessary, identify solutions to achieve improvements in critical measures of performance -- such as cost, quality and service.
