PFAS Testing Results for On-Base DoD-Owned and Operated Drinking Water Systems
The DoD Components have tested all DoD-owned and operated drinking water systems to identify drinking water that exceeded the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s 2016 lifetime drinking water Health Advisory (HA) levels of 70 ppt for PFOS and PFOA. The Department takes immediate, short-term actions to address DoD drinking water systems that tested above EPA’s 2016 HAs. After stopping this drinking water exposure to PFOS and PFOA, DoD has implemented long-term drinking water solutions, such as closing wells, installing new wells, and adding permanent PFAS-specific treatment equipment to drinking water systems. No one on base is drinking water above EPA’s 2016 HAs for PFOS or PFOA where DoD is the known source of release. DoD is continuing to test DoD-owned and operated drinking water systems to ensure PFOS and PFOA levels remain below the EPA 2016 HAs.
DoD Cleanup Actions to Address Off-Base Drinking Water
DoD conducts sampling of drinking water off-base to ensure it identifies potential impacts of PFAS resulting from DoD activities. Where there was PFOS/PFOA in drinking water resulting from DoD activities above the 2016 EPA lifetime HA for drinking water, the Department immediately took action to address the drinking water exposure. This swift action is consistent with EPA’s recommendations and includes initiating short-term remedies (e.g., providing bottled water, point-of-use water filters) and long-term solutions (e.g., municipal connections, filtration systems). The Department's priority is to quickly reduce significantly elevated levels of PFOS and PFOA in drinking water so that no one – on or off base – is drinking water that is above EPA’s lifetime HAs where DoD is the known source. PFAS Fact Sheet Search
PFAS SNAPSHOTS (i.e. fact sheets) provide testing results for and the status of actions to address PFOS and PFOA in on-base DoD-owned and operated drinking water systems where applicable (see Table 1). PFAS SNAPSHOTS for the installations are searchable by state and illustrate where PFOS and/or PFOA sampling results exceeded the 2016 EPA HAs in DoD-owned and operated on-base drinking water, off-base drinking water, and/or groundwater that is not consumed as drinking water.
