PRODUCT SUPPORT AWARDS
PSM Awards

The Product Support Manager (PSM) is a critical program position in delivering weapon system readiness affordably and effectively. The PSM is the Program Manager’s expert on sustainment planning, responsible for implementing product support capabilities that affordably achieve the user’s requirements for system availability. This award recognizes PSM contributions to controlling cost within affordability caps, promoting industry competition and innovation, and implementing effective product support strategies.

The Secretary of Defense Product Support Manager (PSM) Awards Program honors outstanding PSM performance in two categories: Major Defense Acquisition Programs and Major Acquisition Information Systems, Acquisition Categories (ACAT) I; and Major Weapon System/Other Weapon Systems, ACAT II and below. This award supports the Department’s goal to enhance the Defense Acquisition Workforce (DAW) with incentives, increased capabilities, and recognition of the PSM as a critical to program support. It furthers the DAW vision of creating a high quality, high-performing, agile DAW to achieve technological superiority and protect America's National Security.

PBL Awards

Performance-Based Logistics (PBL) is the DoD product support strategy to deliver weapon system readiness. PBL is an outcome based support strategy that provides an integrated support solution that balances warfighter readiness and affordability. This is based on output measures, such as weapon system availability and Operations and Support costs, rather than input measures, such as parts technical services.

The Secretary of Defense Performance-Based Logistics (PBL) Awards Program honors outstanding PBL performance in two categories: the System Level and the Sub-system Level. The System Level Award is named in honor of the late Gerald R. "Jerry" Beck who had a long distinguished career as a DoD Logistician. Mr. Beck was instrumental in establishing the PBL Program and helped initiate the annual awards program. The winners in each category receive a plaque acknowledging their achievement. The permanent PBL award is on display in the Pentagon and commemorates the current and past winners.

Overall management of the Secretary of Defense PBL Awards Program is performed by the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment (USD(A&S)).
