When considering how DoD efforts stay ahead of current and future threats, does packaging come to mind? Maybe it should.

Honoring the evolution of “the science of military packaging,” in her remarks, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Logistics, Ms. Leigh Method, presented the 2021 DoD Packaging Awards at the National Institute of Packaging, Handling, and Logistics Engineers Awards ceremony in Midwest City, Oklahoma, on May 18.

“Today, defense packaging is a specialized skill that serves as a differentiator, and enables DoD to operate effectively on a global scale,” said Ms. Method. “Our defense packaging professionals deliver for the Warfighter every day.”

The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Distribution Vaccine Operations Team received the Packaging Innovation Excellence Award for supporting the delivery of more than 36 million critical medical supply items and equipment to frontline healthcare workers in support of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The team simultaneously and rapidly established a global distribution pipeline for COVID-19 vaccines that delivered more than a million doses to forward-deployed Service members, their families, and DoD contractors in 35 countries.

“This is an outstanding achievement, given the requirements for scheduling, inspection, cold chain management, and recipient verification for each shipment,” said Method.

Additionally, the year’s DOD Packaging Production Achievement Award went to the Preservation, Packaging, Packing, and Marking Team of DLA Distribution Corpus Christi, Texas, for preserving and packaging 57,213 assets valued at more than $3.2 billion, and de-packaging 9,535 assets valued at more than $966 million in support of Material Release Orders to provision industrial operations at the depot; packaging 930 aviation engines, transmissions, and components; and de-packaging 829 more (including draining all fluids). The team also initiated a packaging remediation and compliance program that significantly exceeded enterprise goals for discrepancy reports and denial rates.
