Communications and Outreach

Industry/Professional Associations

Aerospace Industries Association (AIA)

The Aerospace Industries Association is leading efforts to address science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) needs in the future in order that the DoD and commercial industries have the talent they need to stay ahead in this highly complex world.

International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE)

The International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) is a not-for-profit membership organization founded in 1990 with the mission “to advance the state of the art and practice of systems engineering in industry, academia, and government by promoting interdisciplinary, scaleable approaches to produce technologically appropriate solutions that meet societal needs.” ODASD(SE) is a long-time member of INCOSE's Corporate Advisory Board (CAB), providing input on overall INCOSE direction, focus, and priorities; acting as a conduit between INCOSE and the DoD for information exchange, key corporate systems engineering-related issues, and access to corporate executive management; and providing input to development of the bi-annual priority needs list and assessment of how well INCOSE is meeting those needs based on status inputs from the BoD and the Technical Board.

National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) Systems Engineering Division

The National Defense Industrial Association’s Systems Engineering Division provides insight into industry support for Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology & Logistics interests. The Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Systems Engineering chairs the SE Division’s Government Steering Committee.

The mission of the SE Division is “to promote the widespread use of Systems Engineering in the DoD acquisition process in order to achieve affordable and supportable weapon systems that meet the needs of the military users, and to provide a forum for the open exchange between government and industry to trade ideas and concepts, and develop a new understanding of a streamlined process.” The SE Division was created to address some of the technical and management issues related to the DoD systems and software engineering thrusts, such as improving system supportability, sustainability, and affordability, and to put emphasis on a totally integrated and balanced design approach to weapon system design.

The SE Division serves as a lead activity with participation by several affiliate organizations, including the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA), International Council of Systems Engineering (INCOSE), National Training Systems Association (NTSA), Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics (AIAA), the SAE International, and SOLE, the International Logistics Society.

Active committees include systems engineering disciplines, training, modeling and simulation, quality and reliability assurance, affordability, supportability, open system architecture, automatic test and integrated diagnostics. The SE Division is the industry sponsor of the DOD/Industry Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) Project involving restructuring the now stand-alone software engineering institute capability maturity models into an integrated model. The division also hosts the annual Conference on Systems Engineering and Supportability.

SAE International

The Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Systems Engineering (ODASD(SE)) is a voting member supporting SAE International's Systems, Standards and Technology Council (SSTC) activities in the area of systems engineering, data and configuration management, human systems integration, reliability, and safety. The SSTC is SAE's focal point for all matters dealing with engineering and operations management, engineering technology and related policy areas affecting the government electronics and IT marketplace. It is a forum for discussion of technical management issues and prepares industry positions on proposed legislation, studies, regulations, standards, and related documents.
